Probing regolith-covered surfaces in low gravity

چکیده
The surfaces of many planetary bodies, including asteroids, moons, and planets, are composed rubble-like grains held together by varying levels gravitational attraction cohesive forces. Future instrumentation for operation on, interacting with, such will require efficient effective design principles methods testing. Here we present results from the EMPANADA experiment (Ejecta-Minimizing Protocols Applications Needing Anchoring or Digging on Asteroids) which flew several reduced gravity parabolic flights. studies effects insertion a flexible probe into granular medium as function ambient gravity. This is done an idealized 2D system well more realistic 3D sample. To quantify dynamics inside material employ photoelasticity to identify grain-scale forces throughout system, while in experiments use simulated regolith. Experiments were conducted at three different gravity: martian, lunar, microgravity. In this work, demonstrate that photoelastic technique provides complement traditional load cell measurements sample, show exhibits similar behaviour We note presence discrete, stick-slip failure events depends acceleration.

R-covered Branched Surfaces
We give sufficient conditions for an R-covered codimension one foliation F of a closed 3-manifold to be carried by an Rcovered branched surface; that is, a branched surface carrying only foliations with the R-covered property. These conditions can be readily verified for many examples. In cases where the branched surface is generated by disks, the R-covered property is stable for F in the sense...
متن کاملEnriques surfaces covered by Jacobian Kummer surfaces
This paper classifies Enriques surfaces whose K3-cover is a fixed Picard-general Jacobian Kummer surface. There are exactly 31 such surfaces. We describe the free involutions which give these Enriques surfaces explicitly. As a biproduct, we show that Aut(X) is generated by elements of order 2, which is an improvement of the theorem of S. Kondo.
متن کاملProbing Composite Gravity in Colliders
We explore scenarios in which the graviton is not a fundamental degree of freedom at short distances but merely emerges as an effective degree of freedom at long distances. In general, the scale of such graviton ‘compositeness’, Λg, can only be probed by measuring gravitational forces at short distances, which becomes increasingly difficult and eventually impossible as the distance is reduced. ...
متن کاملProbing Gravity with Spacetime Sirens
A gravitational observatory such as LISA will detect coalescing pairs of massive black holes, accurately measure their luminosity distance and help identify a host galaxy or an electromagnetic counterpart. If dark energy is a manifestation of modified gravity on large scales, gravitational waves from cosmologicallydistant spacetime sirens are direct probes of this new physics. For example, a gr...
متن کاملProbing TeV gravity at neutrino telescopes
Models with extra dimensions and the fundamental scale at the TeV could imply signals in large neutrino telescopes due to gravitational scattering of cosmogenic neutrinos in the detection volume. Apart from the production of microscopic black holes, extensively studied in the literature, we present gravity-mediated interactions at larger distances, that can be calculated in the eikonal approxim...
